Highlights from the 2nd Annual Papakōlea Pa’ina

The Second Annual Papakōlea Pā’inathemed E Nānā I Ke Kumu, was held on Saturday, August 12, 2017, from 10 am to 3 pm, at the Papakōlea Community Park.  The community gathering honored our kūpuna and celebrated community resiliency.  Over 600 people attended the event, having access to a marketplace of 25 local vendors, and ‘ono Hawaiian food prepared by Kalehulani LLC and the Koki ‘Ohana.

The 2017 Papakōlea Living Legacy Award was awarded to Tutu Eliza Kaimihana Nahoeu.  The 2017 Papakōlea Cultural Practitioner Award was awarded to Aunty Ethel Teruko Leiroselani Mau.  As a direct result of the event, the Papakolea Community Scholarship Program was established, and five scholarships were awarded to: Chanel Kahanu O’Keola Walker, Kamali’i McShane Padilla, Triton Ramos, Pi’imoku Ma’a Kahealani Keahi, and Victoria Solatorio.

Community enjoyed an incredible show by: Pomaika’i Lyman and the Keawe ‘Ohana, Keauhou, Kuana Torres Kahele, and Natalie Ai Kamauu. Special guests included: Aunty Nina Keali’iwahamana, Kelina Eldridge – 2017 Miss Aloha Hula, Hālau Hula O Nāpunaheleonāpua, Hālau Kaulakahi, and the Men of Hālau Nā Māmo O Pu’uanahulu.  Mahalo nui to our event Chair, Uncle Sam Kaina, and all entertainers and participants making this event a reality.
